Texts in Play
Overview
My TEXTS IN PLAY approach is like this: Imagine all the Texts you think are relevant to your work are like different elements on a big sound board. I drop and add the different Text Instruments for various relevance reasons at different times. Sometimes the mix sounds like good art, so I make something from it. Sometimes it’s just continuing hums or drones, and I think about what could be dropped or added or varied.
I’m keeping track of it this way for various reasons: Inner Mind Sound became my way of processing and developing life and work. A much longer historical viewpoint has become necessary with. And then my new point of view on the world internet. What might be relevant from this very long timeline, given this new technology. What can be made with this now? How are my previous talents—especially playwriting—relevant, sure: but to what ends? And so how is my personal place in the here and now going to assert this is significant. And I’m doing this. Because I’m basically also sharing history lessons, ethics parables, political assertions, human witness, human decency, compassion.
And now to turn to how Richard Schechner’s work—and the Web and Fan illustrations in particular—helps us see the long anthropological point of view on what I’m trying to build in this choice of creative work.
